In which we use Randall Munroe’s ‘simple writer‘ to explain plant-and-pipette topics. Can you guess what they are?
Monroe’s ‘simple writer’ limits language use to only the 10 hundred most common words in the English language. So the word ‘chloroplast’ is out. But so is ‘duck’, ‘cuddle’, and ‘explosion’.
We’ve tried to define a plant and pipette related word using only these common words. Can you tell what we’re talking about? The solution is shown at the bottom.
This hand sized machine is used to carefully move water and stuff like water from one place to another. It is easy to control how much water is moved and it can easily be done again and again. People who figure out stuff use this hand sized machine to work on understanding the stuff that happens inside of all living things.
The best of these machines can move very little water: you would have to use it twenty hundred hundred times to fill one cup of coffee. However, people who figure stuff out only need very little water for their work. That’s why they would rather use a coffee machine to fill their cups.
Can you guess what we are describing?
